In 1984, the SMU Mustangs took their high-gear football to Hawai'i, facing off against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the Aloha Bowl. In front of a record crowd of over 41,000 fans, SMU and Notre Dame each put up over 300 yards of total offense. However, it was SMU who ultimately won the day, as the fourth quarter became a trench-fought, time-of-possession battle. The Mustangs chipped away at the clock and held off a final surge by Notre Dame to win their last bowl appearance until 2009.
